VMH, Saragur, is the nucleus of SVYM’s healthcare activities in rural Mysore. It is a multispeciality secondary care centre serving about 300,000 people in HD Kote, Hunsur, Nanjangud and Gundlupet taluks. Established in 1998, VMH has emergency and critical care facilities, a full-service operating theatre, a neonatal intensive care unit, care and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS, telemedicine, and fully computerized medical record management. It also houses a blood bank, and the first NACO-recognized counselling and HIV testing centre in rural India.

The VMH x-ray machine was not DICOM-enabled, and meeting the demand of the large patient population proved a challenge. Telerad Foundation’s technology team visited the hospital to study the situation and connected the x-ray machine to a digital scanner, enabling the radiologists to scan the plain x-ray films and transmit them to Bengaluru over the Internet. Telerad Foundation radiologists from across the world now provide expert opinions on even the most challenging and complex cases quickly and efficiently, for free.
