Why Truckers Need Healthcare
India’s logistics and transport sector relies heavily on long-distance truck drivers and allied workers who move goods across thousands of kilometres every day. Despite playing a critical role in the national economy, this workforce often faces significant barriers to accessing regular healthcare.
Several factors contribute to these challenges:
- Highly mobile lifestyle with long hours on highways
- Limited access to healthcare facilities along transport routes
- Irregular sleep patterns and poor dietary habits
- Higher exposure to communicable diseases due to extended travel and working conditions
- Low awareness and delayed diagnosis of chronic illnesses
As a result, truck drivers are often vulnerable to health conditions such as:
- Diabetes and hypertension
- Tuberculosis
- Vision problems
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Lifestyle-related health risks
The Apollo Tyres Healthcare Centres address this gap by bringing accessible, preventive, and primary healthcare services directly to transport hubs, ensuring that truck drivers and allied workers can receive timely medical attention without interrupting their journeys.
Partners and Implementation Model
The Truckers Healthcare Programme is implemented through a collaborative model involving corporate CSR leadership and experienced implementing partners.
Programme Donor – Apollo Tyres Foundation
Implementing Partner – Telerad Foundation
Under this partnership model:
- Apollo Tyres Foundation provides programme design, strategic direction, and CSR support.
- Telerad Foundation manages on-ground implementation, healthcare delivery, and operational management of selected centres.
The programme operates through Apollo Tyres Healthcare Centres (ATHCs) located at major transport corridors and logistics hubs across India.
These centres deliver services such as:
- Primary medical consultations
- Screening for communicable and non-communicable diseases
- Vision screening and occupational health services
- Preventive health counselling
- Distribution of essential medicines and referral support
This collaborative model enables the programme to deliver structured healthcare services for mobile worker populations, while maintaining strong operational standards and community engagement.
Programme Context
The Apollo Tyres Healthcare Centres form part of a nationwide initiative designed to improve health outcomes among truck drivers, co-drivers, helpers, and allied transport workers.
Telerad Foundation has been associated with the programme across multiple phases. The Foundation previously operated healthcare centres in Karimnagar and Hyderabad (2021–2022) and currently manages the centres at Yeshwanthpur (Bengaluru) and Sankari (Salem district).
Through these centres, healthcare services are delivered to transport workers and communities located around major logistics hubs, helping improve access to preventive healthcare for underserved populations.
Acknowledgement
Telerad Foundation expresses its sincere appreciation to the healthcare teams at the Bengaluru and Sankari centres for their dedication and commitment to the programme.
The Foundation also acknowledges the guidance and continued support of the Apollo Tyres Foundation, whose partnership has made it possible to deliver healthcare services to the trucking community.
