Jayavardhan Patel’s experience with Video Consultatio at Koparli Phygital PHC, Vapi, Valsad district, Gujarat
29-year-old Jayvardhan Patel is from the Dumlav (Dumalav) Village in Koparli. He visited the Koparli PHC with severe ear pain. The GNM stationed there took his medical history and current complaints before connecting Jayvardhan with Dr Sunitha Madhavan, ENT Specialist from RxDx CHANDY, Siddapura, for a video consultation. From booking an appointment to completing the video consultation, it only took half-an-hour of the patient’s time.
Dr Sunitha advised the GNM to examine Jayvardhan’s ears using Otoscope, a digital instrument to inspect the ear, especially the external canals and tympanum. The Otoscope revealed an insect in the ear canal. The ENT specialist requested that the GNM send Jayvardhan to the PHC Medical Officer for ear cleaning, but MO was unavailable that day.
Based on the doctor’s referral, the GNM redirected Jayvardhan to the Valsad District Hospital, Gujarat. At The District Hospital, the ENT specialist removed the insect and cleaned up Jayvardhan’s ears. During the interview, Jayvardhan confirmed that he no longer suffered from pain or discomfort.
Jayvardhan Patel was content with his experience. In his words, as all types of doctors are available online, the beneficiaries don’t need to spend much time or money going to private hospitals. In his case, though the procedure could not be completed within the PHC, the promptness and expertise of the online doctor and GNM ensured he received a solution to his complaint within the day. He was enthusiastic about sharing his experience with others so they could also benefit from the free consultations and medicines from the PHCs.
The Phygital PHCs is a telehealth project supported by the Bayer Foundation, India, and managed by the Telerad Foundation & RxDx Healthcare. The Phygital PHCs are co-located within government PHCs. It is equipped with the latest IT and Medtech equipment and well stocked with specialist medicines and reagents. The project has been functioning for nearly a year now.
